Ryan Kelley will post his full scouting report on Zack Wheeler on Sunday, July 8th. Don’t forget to check it out.
New York Mets top prospect Zack Wheeler pitched against the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Thursday, July 5th. The twenty-two-year-old right-hander cut through Richmond’s lineup like butter, dominating Gary Brown’s club with a fastball that sat 94-97 MPH and a hammer curveball. He tossed 7 1/3 innings of one-run baseball, striking out six batters without surrendering a walk.
Wheeler has put together an extraordinary season thus far. He was recently elected to his second All-Star Futures Game– his first while representing the Mets organization. He boasts an 8-4 record with a 2.62 ERA and 88 strikeouts through 92 innings. He’s allowed just one homerun on the season and both his 0.1 HR/9 and his 6.7 H/9 pace the Eastern League. In fact, Wheeler currently ranks among the league’s top five arms in nearly every pitching category.
